about

Taking its name from the refrain of a well known shaped note tune, Till The Warfare Is Over is an album of instrumental recordings of shaped note music. Most often encountered in the singing of The Sacred Harp, many of these tunes date from America's colonial period, but several recent compositions in that style are included as well.

With the usual human voices being replaced by guitar, bouzouki, mandolin, low whistles, and button accordion, the strong and often stark harmonies contrast (sharply at times) with more melodic harmonies we're used to hearing now. Things were done differently then.

The tunes were often named for places, and a bit less commonly, for people. That tradition in naming these pieces continues to this day.
